Challenges in using natural products

Now a days many people are acknowledging the importance of herbal or natural products. They are realizing chemical based products are harmful for them whether consumed internally or applied externally. Swami Ramdev ji has done a tremendous job in creating awareness about the rich Ayurvedic base of India. People are now recognising the fact that if their body feels any imbalance from its natural state, then healing is also in the nature itself. There is a reason why nettle plant is always beside dock leaves, a spinach like plant, as the former stings and the latter heals. However, using natural products has its own challenges.

In this modern era, we always feel short of time for self care. We have been so used to instant results caused by chemicals that it becomes difficult for us to opt for natural products. One needs patience and perseverance while using herbal things. Usually, we start using natural herbs & products only after we have damaged our skin , hair and health. At this stage sometimes it gets too late to recover. Since, we as brand Yauvanya deal in hair and skin care products, we interact daily with our customers who complain about hair loss and are looking for quick fix solution to reverse the damage. We suggest them to use Herbal mix consisting of Bhringraj, Brahmi , Amla and other herbs. Although these herbs are extremely useful and good for stopping hair loss, but to consider them as magical, which will somehow immediately reverse the hairloss that has occurred, is misplaced. So , our effort through our brand is to make people aware of this hard fact of life well in advance and encourage them to use natural products before the damage has been done. If middle aged people are facing these problems at least their children should not. For children its not easy to understand. We are facing this challenge with our children also. For example, they do not want to wash their hair with shampoo made up of amla reetha shikakai, as it does not have any fragrance or froth unlike chemical based shampoos. They do not want to use Neem powder or Amba haldi based natural face pack for acne but will instead go in for instant acne removal creams without knowing that actually that will harm their skin in the long run. As a fashion or style, young girls go to beauty parlours to get their hair colored with harmful chemicals. Even men do. People find it tedious to use henna/indigo for coloring hair naturally since it takes few hours for the whole process and getting the exact desired color tone is difficult, but atleast pure 100% natural product will not harm your hair.

In the nut shell, if you want your body to retain its youth over extended periods , start using natural/herbal products. Read and understand the ingredients of whatever you are buying. Patience and the consistency in choosing and using such products are the only two things required on your part, leave the rest to nature.

In growing up days, without having much knowledge, I used to apply different face packs prepared by my elder sister, with multani-mitti or besan as the key ingredients. Also, I used to see my father using natural shampoo made with amla, reetha, shikakai to arrest hairfall. Now at this stage of our lives, after realizing the importance of these natural homemade recipes, we (me and my spouse) decided to start our own venture, leaving our corporate jobs. We wanted to make people aware of natural, pure and raw things, and also make available, good quality products under our brand Yauvanya.

Our Motto – Make People Love Themselves

Yauvanya means youthfulness and to stay young by being close to nature. By introducing various hair and skin related products using natural ingredients, we have been personally trying to educate people to go in for chemical free products. Because of our personal experiences, we can empathize with people, when they complain about hair loss, premature greying, dandruff, blemishes, wrinkles, pigmentation, acne etc, due to frequent use of chemical based products. We encourage them to use natural products and make them aware about the challenges of using natural products, as people looking for instantaneous results often lose patience.

We commenced our journey by introducing Indigo Powder under Yauvanya Brand, an excellent 100% natural alternative to hair dyes. This product was the result of my search for natural hair color when I saw my first grey hair. We launched it in US for online shoppers and got tremendous reviews. This gave momentum to our brand. We felt happy that we had many like-minded people. We approached farmers directly to ensure best possible quality. We researched and consulted experts, kept on adding products. One such product was Yauvanya Anti-hairfall Hair Care Pack which gives you an opportunity to make your own herbal shampoo at home and helps you fight hair-loss, if used regularly. Another great addition was Yauvanya Jadi Buti Mix – a combination of 11 traditional herbs, to make your own healthy herbal hair oil. In our endeavor to bring the best to our customers from across the globe, we are importing Black Moroccan Beldi Soap directly from Morocco. Another great product is African Raw Shea Butter which is made out of shea nuts grown in Africa. Today, there are more than 35 such traditional and exotic products that make their space in Yauvanya’s portfolio.

Profit is only one dimension for us. We also desire that our venture should blend seamlessly in the environment in which it exists, so that it is more sustainable and meaningful to the society at large. We took a decision to make needy and under privileged women as part of our team. We hired young married girls from our neighborhood, who were given an opportunity to indulge in something productive and also gain financially. We trained them and they turned out to be very efficient and sincere workforce for us. They consider this venture as their own and contribute to our efforts to improve upon existing products and introduce new products.

By grace of God and goodwill of our loyal customers, Yauvanya has become a byword for quality and has a footprint in more than 12 countries.

Frequently Asked Questions on Hair Color(Henna/Indigo)

Herbal Colour for HairDear All,

After coming across continuous queries about Herbal Colour for Hair and apprehensions regarding henna or indigo powder, I thought of writing them down.

Q) Why should we use henna or indigo powder over other color dyes ?

A)  Color dyes have one or the other chemical in them which damage the hair. Also , long term exposure to these chemicals cause allergic reactions to the skin. Whereas, henna or indigo powder, pure leaf powder, do not harm hair or skin. It also controls hair fall.

Q) What color does henna give ?

A) Used alone pure henna give orange/flaming red color.

Q) What color does indigo powder give ? Does it give black color ?

A)  Depending on the texture of hair and the usage, it gives light brown, dark brown or black color.

In rare cases, on first use, it may not give these shades, but with regular use, the color will get absorbed in your hair and grey/white shade will start reducing.

Q)  I have never used henna. I use only L’oreal. Can I start using henna ?

A)  Yes, you can. But you have to keep patience. It will take a month or two to reduce the effect of color dye and in turn, to get absorbed henna’s or indigo’s effect.

Q) Process is cumbersome and time consuming. Whereas color dyes are instantly effective, then why ?

A) There is no gain without pain. Ultimately health is more important and not convenience.

Q) What is the  best way to use indigo/henna ?

A) Everyone is having his / her method to use these powders and . In most of the cases they use 1-step or 2-step process but ladies keep on trying different ways to get the optimum way as per their hair texture and suitability.

In my previous blogs I have mentioned the use procedure for Yauvanya indigo/henna. You may start with it, later you can customize as required.

Some of the add-ons that you can experiment with are coffee powder, amla powder, tea water, cloves etc.

Q) How frequently Herbal Colour for Hair is to be applied ?

A) Generally, 10-15 days gap in starting as it takes time for the color to get absorbed, then as per the need. Again varies from person to person.

Q) Can only indigo powder be used ? Or used only with henna ?

A) Yes, people use it both ways. Either with henna or alone. But mostly its effective after henna or mixed with henna as it tones down the orange / flaming red color of henna and gives nice shades of brown.

Q) Can indigo be mixed with any henna powder, like ozone henna or ayur henna powder ?

A) Yes, you can if you are confident that it is pure and no chemical is added in it.

Q) What is kali mehndi or black henna ? Some claim to be instantaneous.

A) As per our knowledge and experience, pure henna/mehndi as is the case with Yauvanya Henna powder, has only one color, i.e. orange/flaming red and cannot be instantaneous. You have to follow the procedure of soaking henna overnight, applying henna paste for 2-3 hours and so on.

All hennas that claim to be instantaneous or to give different shades ranging from golden to brown to black, are essentially henna powder based chemical dyes.

These are as harmful as normal chemical based hair colors/dyes.

Q) There is vast difference in prices of Henna Powder available on the net and in the market. How do we decide what to buy?

A) Ultimately it all depends on your experience, As a general rule, pure is costly. ☺☺☺

Most people are guilty of damaging their hair in initial years either because of carelessness or because of ignorance regarding the right products to use ?

Best Hair Care Oil

Most common hair styling and hair care solutions in the market are chemical based and do a lot of harm to your hair.
The positive thing is people are getting aware nowadays of natural products which are available and are willing to try them.
I always advise people that its never too late to start something, to keep yourself and your hair healthy. All you need is a bit of patience and perseverance which are essential when using 100% natural products.
Mostly people are worried about greying of hair and that too prematurely. Often this is a direct result of using wrong products laden with chemicals.
One such natural product is Indigo leaf powder which when used in tandem with Henna gives a range of shades from brown to black.
The more you use indigo the darker is your hair shade. I too had never applied henna earlier but now I use Indigo Leaf Powder along with pure Henna powder and am very happy with the results.
The brown shade that I get merges beautifully with my black hair.
Moreover, I have started applying Best Hair Care oil once a week (inspite of having oily hair) and that too oil full of natural herbs. My hair gets conditioned and with lesser use of shampoo, the colour of my hair also gets retained for a longer time.

Anti-Hairfall Shampoo DIY Kit

After getting immense response for Yauvanya’s Home Made Shampoo DIY kit (Anti Hair fall Shampoo) , I asked few of my customers how they are finding this product. They are happy using it and also they find it exciting to make this shampoo at home. With regular use their hair fall and dandruff has greatly reduced.

Instead of using chemically treated shampoos that actually damage hair over a period of time, it is a great idea to make a shampoo at home (Yauvanya DIY kit) that not only nourishes your hair but also protects it from damage.

Going back to Indian Ayurvedic practices, there are three key ingredients that have been used in almost any hair related remedy.

Benefits/ Salient Features

      • It is pure and natural.
      • Only the best quality herbs are sourced directly from the farmer.
      • Part of Indian traditional Ayurvedic Knowledge Base, renowned for its numerous benefits on Hair.
      • It prevents Hairfall.
      • It also strengthens hair follicles, promotes hair growth and gives luster to hair.

Key ingredients are Amla, Reetha and Shikakai. These three ingredients have many useful applications in hair care remedies because: They have active components that nourish the hair and help its growth.

These components are mild in nature and Anti Hair fall Shampoo ,  allowing the natural texture and natural oils of the hair retained for a healthy shine and appearance.

Anti Hair fall Shampoo

Use Procedure

In about 1000ml of water, soak the mixture overnight. The next morning, boil the mixture for around 10 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool and then using a blender; squash the ingredients to a pulp. You will notice that there is a lot of froth produced when you do this. This is when you know that your shampoo has acquired all the goodness of these ingredients. Strain the mixture and then use the strained liquid as a shampoo. You need not consume the whole liquid immediately. You can store it in a glass bottle for use in the future. Shampoo your hair at least once a week with this homemade shampoo.

After all, who minds little patience and effort if it is natural, pure and healthy !!!
For benefit of everyone I am answering some common customer queries:

  • Initially when you apply the liquid some people may feel that their hair have become rough but once rinsed thoroughly their hair will become smooth.
  • While preparing this shampoo, boil the mixture for 5-10 minutes.
  • Also you can store the liquid residue in a bottle for some days.
PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a natural homemade shampoo, it will NOT froth (Froth is not an indication of cleaning prowess) or have artificial sweet fragrance as other chemical shampoos have.
